The Global Network Initiative (GNI) is thrilled to announce that the UCLA Institute for Technology, Law & Policy (ITLP) has joined GNI as an academic member.

Founded in January of 2020, the UCLA Institute for Technology, Law & Policy is a collaboration between the UCLA School of Law and the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering whose mission is to foster research and analysis to ensure that new technologies are developed, implemented, and regulated in ways that are socially beneficial, equitable, and accountable. ITLP is led by an executive team comprising Michael Karanicolas (Executive Director), Mark McKenna (Professor of Law; Faculty Co-director), and John Villasenor (Professor of Engineering and Law; Faculty Co-director).

“I’ve been following the work of the GNI closely since its inception, and am very excited to contribute more directly to its important mission,” said Michael Karanicolas. “As UCLA’s engagement with the digital rights and platform governance space continues to grow, I’m sure there will be a lot of interest among faculty and students in engaging with colleagues at the GNI, and across its global network of collaborators.”

“ITLP is an innovative institution that brings together an incredible range of expertise, filtered through critical inquiry and systems-level insight,” said Jason Pielemeier, GNI’s Executive Director. “We will benefit tremendously from their participation.”
