Collaborations

Through collaborations with partners around the world, GNI creates safe spaces for learning and collective advocacy with governments, international institutions, and other key stakeholders in support of laws and policies that promote and protect freedom of expression and privacy.

GNI engages with governments, international organizations, and others to share the lessons we have learned and articulate and assess responsible business conduct in the tech sector. Current organizations and processes GNI is collaborating with include:

Freedom Online Coalition Advisory Network

The FOC Advisory Network (FOC-AN) is an independent multistakeholder group composed of civil society, academia and private sector representatives who provide advice on aims, objectives and activities, as well as support the FOC’s mission of advancing Internet freedom and human rights online through its working methods.

GNI serves as a member of the Advisory Network and co-chairs the FOC task force on Internet Shutdowns in collaboration with the United Kingdom and AccessNow.

Christchurch Call Advisory Network

The Christchurch Call Advisory Network is a part of the wider Christchurch Call Community. Its members represent perspectives including human rights, freedom of expression, digital rights, counter-radicalisation, victim support, and public policy.

GNI serves as a member of the Advisory Network.

OECD.AI Network of Experts on AI Risk & Accountability

Through the OECD.AI Network of Experts workstream on AI risk, the OECD is engaging with partner organizations including policy makers and experts, to identify common guideposts to assess AI risk and impact for Trustworthy AI. The goal is to help implement effective and accountable trustworthy AI systems by promoting global consistency.

GNI serves as a member of the Network of Experts.

Action Coalition on Meaningful Transparency

The Action Coalition on Meaningful Transparency is an initiative launched under the auspices of the Danish Tech for Democracy Initiative and the corresponding year of action. It is governed by a Steering Group of civil society organizations around the world, engaging with an Advisory Group of public and private sector representatives, and aims to foster a broad set of participants in a multistakeholder advisory coalition.

GNI established the Coalition and manages it together with Brainbox Institute.

Responsible Development of Generative AI

The Global Network Initiative has collaborated with the UN B-Tech project on several initiatives related to the responsible development of generative AI. This has included co-hosting a roundtable on AI, Human Rights, and the Evolving Regulatory Environment and providing input into a series of foundational papers on Advancing Responsible Development and Deployment of Generative AI.

NetMundial+10

NetMundial+10 is a global, multistakeholder event scheduled for April 29 and 30, 2024, building on the successful 2014 NetMundial event and its related roundmap. GNI serves on the High Level Executive Committee, which will oversee the organization of the event, shaping details such as the program, modes of participation, and expected outcomes.

Past collaborations have included the Internet & Jurisdiction Policy Network, and the OECD Project on Voluntary Transparency Reporting for Terrorist and Violent Extremist Content. GNI has also partnered with multilateral institutions, including the Council of Europe, UNESCO, UN Human Rights, and the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate, GNI also continues to engage with the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism.
