GNI welcomes the adoption of a series of recommendations by the Freedom Online Coalition. In September 2013 GNI wrote to the countries in the Coalition asking for greater transparency in their online surveillance activities. In particular we are pleased to see the Coalition commit to enhance transparency in government processes and hope this extends to the surveillance requests they make and also to enabling companies to be more transparent about the requests they receive.
This set of commitments by the Freedom Online Coalition is an important step. Measuring the effectiveness of the implementation comes next. We hope to have the opportunity to work with the Coalition in the coming months on appropriate benchmarks for use at the next and future conferences of the Coalition.
