The Global Network Initiative (GNI) is seeking an energetic and engaged full-time Intern to join our team for 10 weeks during June, July, and August. We are looking for candidates who have: strong organizational skills; an eye for detail; experience working in a fast-paced environment and on small teams; a desire for professional growth; experience conducting legal research; and a demonstrated interest in human rights and/or technology policy. This internship will be focused on communications as well as policy/legal research. This internship offers a $5,000 stipend.
The mission of GNI is to protect and advance freedom of expression and privacy rights in the information and communications technology (ICT) industry by setting a global standard for responsible company decision making and serving as a multistakeholder voice in the face of government restrictions and demands. Our global membership includes academic experts and academic organizations, civil society groups (including digital rights and press freedom groups), leading ICT companies, and investors from around the world.
This internship will provide opportunities to work with a small, dedicated staff of 7 people in a hybrid remote/in-person environment, and to engage with leading practitioners at the intersection of technology policy, human rights, and corporate responsibility. It is an excellent starting position for a young professional eager to enter the fields of corporate social responsibility, business and human rights, and/or technology policy.
Responsibilities
- Reporting to the Research and Policy Manager, supporting GNI’s day-to-day operations.
- Assist in coordinating meeting times, taking minutes, maintaining internal tools, and conducting outreach to GNI members as needed
- Provide support on GNI’s external and internal communication outputs
- Provide research and writing support for GNI’s policy and shared learning work.
- Assist with the work of GNI committees in the areas of policy, learning, accountability, and membership
- Assist in the logistical preparation for quarterly board meetings and other external meetings and events by conducting vendor outreach, supporting travel planning and providing , including travel planning, general administrative support.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will:
- Be attentive to detail, resourceful, and creative;
- Be a self-starter comfortable working on a small, decentralized team;
- Be comfortable handling communications work and operating in a fast-paced environment;
- Be a team player;
- Demonstrated adaptability and the ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization;
- Have strong research, writing, and communication skills; and
- Have an undergraduate degree or equivalent work experience.
Other useful experience:
- Academic background, experience, or demonstrated interest in human rights, technology policy, media policy, and/or corporate social responsibility; and
- Experience working with Google Suite, Wordpress, Canva, Mailchimp
- Experience with AirTable software
- Flexibility working with different time zones
