The Global Network Initiative (GNI) is pleased to announce that the Indian digital rights organization Internet Freedom Foundation has joined GNI’s civil society constituency. The Internet Freedom Foundation advocates for the protection of fundamental rights and deepened digital liberties as society becomes increasingly reliant on technology.
“As a GNI Member, we would actively contribute to GNI’s multistakeholder network and bring the perspective of the Indian Internet governance landscape to inform freedom of expression and privacy discussions,” said Co-founder, Trustee, and Executive Director Apar Gupta.
In 2020, the Internet Freedom Foundation participated in the GNI-Internews Fellowship Program. As part of their fellowship, they identified useful lessons for different stakeholders and developed recommendations to mitigate the harms caused by Internet censorship in India.
“GNI welcomes the Internet Freedom Foundation’s knowledge and understanding of Internet shutdowns and website blocking, as well as their experience with public campaigns and strategic litigation, which will inform our collective efforts to protect human rights in the information communications and technology sector,” said GNI Executive Director Judith Lichtenberg.
