Companies participating in the Global Network Initiative (GNI) are independently assessed every two to three years on their progress in implementing the GNI Principles on Freedom of Expression and Privacy. The 2018/2019 independent company assessment cycle will include 11 companies – the largest number thus far – comprising for the first time the seven telecommunications operator and vendor company members that joined GNI in March 2017.

In order to better serve the growing number and diversity of companies being assessed, GNI implemented important enhancements to the 2018/2019 assessment process:

  • Introduction of an Assessment Toolkit – In an effort to consolidate all the necessary information to complete the assessment process applicable to companies coming from different segments of the ICT sector, GNI produced an Assessment Toolkit that draws from the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the UN Guiding Principles Reporting Framework, and builds upon the experiences of previous GNI assessments. The Toolkit presents a common methodology to be used by all assessors to increase the consistency, efficiency, and comparability of assessments.
  • The process will take place on a rolling basis – The GNI’s Board is reviewing assessment reports on a rolling basis across its first three meetings in 2019. GNI will communicate about the outcome of the assessment process at the conclusion of this review process.
