The Global Network Initiative (GNI) is pleased to announce that Software Freedom Law Centre, India (SFLC.in) has joined GNI as a member of the civil society constituency. SFLC.in’s diverse team of technologists, lawyers, policy analysts, and students collaborate on a variety of issues in support of their shared mission of protecting and promoting civil liberties online.

GNI Executive Director Judith Lichtenberg said, “There is no doubt that SFLC.in’s demonstrated policy expertise and engagement on digital rights challenges in India will enhance GNI’s efforts to protect freedom of expression and privacy rights in India and around the world.”

SFLC.in has done extensive research mapping and raising awareness on India’s digital rights challenges, tracking instances of censorship and Internet and service disruptions in the country, performing strategic litigation for protecting civil liberties, working with various stakeholders for bringing about policy changes, and documenting the state of privacy debates. While India is SFLC.in’s jurisdiction focus — the second-largest Internet user base in the world — SFLC.in also works to facilitate global multi-stakeholder collaboration and regularly participates in international policy processes and events.
