The Global Network Initiative (GNI) is excited to announce that Freedom House has joined GNI as a civil society member. Founded in 1941, Freedom House is an independent watchdog organization dedicated to the expansion of freedom and democracy around the world.  It speaks out against the main threats to democracy and empowers people to exercise their fundamental rights through research, advocacy, and direct support to human rights defenders.

“Freedom House’s work to protect and advance free expression, privacy, and other online freedoms directly aligns with the GNI Principles. We’ve long admired the essential work of GNI and we look forward to collaborating with its diverse members to help protect human rights online and strengthen democracy in the digital age,” said Allie Funk, Research Director for Technology and Democracy.

“Freedom House’s expertise and experience documenting threats to democracy, freedom of expression, and media freedom online make it a great addition to GNI. In particular, Freedom House’s broad perspective and deep bench of researchers will greatly benefit GNI’s members and goals,” said GNI Executive Director Jason Pielemeier
